Charcoal Ink Calligraphy for Wedding Invitations

Inner and Outer Envelope Invitation Calligraphy, $3.50 per set
It's definitely peak calligraphy season! I've had the opportunity to work with many wonderful brides this past month, and I can't wait to get images of my work to share. This latest client had gorgeous ecru colored envelopes with a rich charcoal gray ink liner for her inner envelopes.

I was able to custom-match the charcoal gray ink for the outer and inner envelope addresses in calligraphy: and they came out beautifully. The client bride was from New York, so after a phone consultation we decided on a style that would best match her wedding theme - flourished with a slight tilt to the right, similar to the text used to create her invitation ( you can see a small piece of the invite in the top left in the image below)

We will also be working together as we get closer to her wedding on calligraphy for her rehearsal dinner invitations: those will be a smaller job size, but definitely an elegant touch for her special day!

Calligraphy for outer wedding invitation envelope only, $3

I've captioned the images so you can see pricing if you are considering wedding calligraphy for your invites - for an inner and outer envelope, it comes to $3.50 per set, and for just the outer envelope only, this is just $3 each. If you have the budget for calligraphy, it definitely saves that last-minute stress and hassle of addressing your invitations - especially if your guest count reaches the triple-digits!

Interested in calligraphy? I've worked with brides all over the country to help make a statement with their wedding's first impression - the invitation. Shoot me an email to set up your consultation today, discuss your style and pick any color ink you desire :)

Wedding Calligraphy: Navy Ink on Cream Envelopes

Calligraphy for Wedding Invitations, $2 per envelope
Featured here are some images from my latest work with a bride who had navy blue as one of her wedding colors. Her invitations were a cute and simple design, with two birds hanging out in a gorgeous deep navy embossed branch.

After the consultation, we decided the blue would look beautiful on her cream envelopes. I did a custom ink mix to match the embossed design, her return address on the envelope, and the invitation text perfectly.

She opted for a thicker nib for the calligraphy pen, so the lettering made more of a statement on the envelope. The bride also requested less of a flourish on her addresses - and with a thicker pen to work with, that was more than easy to accommodate.

Make Your Wedding Unique with Calligraphy Signage

Calligraphy for Wedding Signage, $2 each
I thought writing about this custom calligraphy job is great timing - considering that there are just two weeks left in my Bridal Wedding Reception Free Calligraphy Giveaway contest, this is a great post to see what can be done if you really want to add some more personal flavor to your reception.

I loved working with this bride - she was fun, enthusiastic, and really wanted to add her own touch to her wedding reception. Her wedding colors were red with navy accents - all with a nautical theme. She had table numbers written on the backs of cards with diagrams illustrating how to eat a lobster for wedding guests!

The first and last images break down all the wedding signage that was done on 6x6 white cards, with "Sole Mates" being the sign used for a basket of flip-flops that guests could change into to be more comfortable, and even a sign explaining the sweet tea beverage choice.

"Reserved" Signs in Calligraphy for Wedding Aisles, $2 each
The calligraphy signs don't only have to be at the reception - but in the ceremony as well. Going with a navy ink, the bride asked for a series of "Reserved" signs (pictured above) to be placed at the end of the aisles to designate where the bridal party and family would be seated.

And lastly, the place cards were little red tags where guests' names were written in white ink - to be tied on mini mason jars as the wedding gift favors. All great ideas to make your wedding have a more personal feel - and all up to you!

Calligraphy for Wedding Signage and Place Cards, $1-$2 each

Wedding Calligraphy: Nautical Navy Theme

Calligraphy for Inner and Outer Envelopes, $2 each

The latest wedding calligraphy project recently completed was a series of inner and outer envelopes in a beautiful cream color. The inner envelopes were lined with an adorable red lobster liner, and the bride I met with informed me that she would be having a nautical wedding.

After our calligraphy consultation, I looked at her outfit (she had a cute "preppy" white jacket with navy piping" and asked what she thought about doing a navy ink color for her envelopes. After showing her a few samples of the color from my portfolio, she excitedly agreed.

Navy Calligraphy for Inner Envelope, $2 per whole set
The envelopes turned out so beautiful! The paper was high-quality from Crane & Co., and came in strong cardboard boxes that allowed for easy transport and exchange. And for paper nerds like me (aren't all calligraphers some kind of paper nerds? With all the writing they do? ;) It was overall very exciting.

I've worked with brides all across the country to provide the wedding calligraphy for their big day. Inner & outer envelopes, place cards, RSVP's, Save the Dates - I've done it all. Local to Boston? Let's grab some coffee and talk about what you are looking for.

Custom Calligraphy: Return Address for Ink Stamp

Custom Calligraphy Return Address Digital File, $15
After consulting with a bride recently who was looking to have some custom calligraphy work done (my favorite!) one of the items she requested was getting a single calligraphy "Return Address" digital file that she could then bring to her own printer so that she could have a custom stamp made for all of her future return addressing needs.

I thought this was such a great idea! After completing the job (see file image, above) I sent to her in her required size and file type. I then decided to try my own and see how it would come out. I chose to use Staples, and uploaded my own address in calligraphy artwork to have a custom self-inking calligraphy return address stamp made.

I was so excited when my stamp finally came in the mail - it came out perfect, and I'm now pleased to offer these custom self inking return address stamps on my etsy website! Not interested in dropping $40? I also  have an option to just purchase your own custom calligraphy return address file that you can use to bring to your own local or favorite printer of your choice!

Custom Calligraphy Return Address Self Inking Stamp, $38
I've sold a few so far, and they've been such a success - I can't wait to do more. You'd think as a calligrapher I'd have thought of this already...but now I look forward to bills and mail so I can stamp my return address. Lame? Maybe. Excited over little awesome things? Definitely.

Click any of the links above to visit the shop listing to get your own custom calligraphy stamp or custom calligraphy return address digital file - it makes a great gift for a new bride (help them commemorate their new address together or new shared name!) or will definitely make your own life easier, if you're a bride with Save the Dates, Invitations, and Thank You Notes to address (that's you're entire guest list x3!)

Calligraphy for Wedding Envelopes: Kraft and Navy

Calligraphy for Inner and Outer Envelopes, $2.50
On a recently completed wedding calligraphy job, the bride here had the great, unique color scheme of navy and kraft. It was a calligraphy job with both inner and outer envelopes, and the bride had the return address on the outer envelope (which was a kraft tone) in navy.

Our initial dilemma was a matter of ink choice between white and navy on the outer kraft envelope: we went back and forth because the kraft color is a medium tone, and it's always a toss up as to what will show up best. For example, on dark tones I always recommend a light color ink so that the text will pop: and dark ink for light envelopes.

Calligraphy for Wedding Invitations

After doing samples of both white and navy ink on the kraft outer envelope, I determined that navy ink looks best: the white seemed to get lost on the paper. I was a little worried that it wouldn't look navy, because the brown tone of the kraft makes the navy lose it's blue tint - but they definitely turned out great.

Then, on the inner envelope, she opted for a white color ink. I've done several jobs with white ink on navy, and always love the way that it looks!

Wedding Calligraphy: Tiffany Blue Bow Place Cards

Tiffany Blue Bow Place Cards, $4.25 for 10
These images were from a recent place card job for a small wedding on the South Shore. One of the wedding colors was Tiffany blue, so these cards had an adorable little blue ribbon on the top center. There were no table numbers assigned with these place cards because the wedding took place in the bride's home - so she just wanted names written out in calligraphy with black ink on the place cards, which were already on tables so that guests would know where to sit.

Cute Bike Place Cards for Wedding!

Had an inquiry today from a bride who was thinking about using these place cards from Wedding Paper Divas for her wedding, and I just had to share for those brides looking for reception table inspiration. These are ivory cards, folded, with that are 3.50 x 2.00 in size.

Pink Bike Wedding Place Card, min. order $2.19 each. From Wedding Paper Divas

I really love cards like this with simple, understated graphics. The bike here just struck me as being so original, and I do love pink. Looks like the design also comes in orange and green, and they have a custom color option. The price per card varies on the amount of cards you are looking for: a set of 10 is $2.19 each. When I do calligraphy for place cards, I usually do about 100: assuming one guest gets one place card. Another option would be to put couples on one card.

Calligraphy for Place Cards

I've noticed trends when doing wedding calligraphy jobs. Last fall, the high-demand color was navy and black. Then it was black on iridescent silver envelopes and place cards for Christmas. This spring, the "in" wedding calligraphy color seems to be chocolate brown, as I've done several jobs using a great Sepia calligraphy ink that I purchased at Blick. Chocolate brown also happens to be one of my favorite colors, so I'm happy to oblige.

Here are some pictures of a recent bride's completed pieces. I actually looked up the vendor she used for her wedding invitations because I was so impressed with the quality - the place cards especially! Pictured here are the place cards from the Green Kangaroo. The cards themselves took the calligraphy ink very well: I used the Sepia calligraphy ink with a C-5 quill nib.

Pricing for wedding calligraphy is as follows:

Outer and Inner Envelope: $2.50 ea.
Outer Envelope Only: $2.00 ea.
Return Address Only: $1.00 ea.
Place cards: $0.75 ea.

Embossed Calligraphy Place Cards

Embossed place cards, $1.00 each

Considering calligraphy for your wedding place cards, but need just a little something extra to make them extra special? Or do you need an extra finishing touch for your special event reception?

The Ash Tree is now pleased to offer embossing services for place cards. Embossed designs are a minor detail that can really add a special touch to your event - but the process can be time-consuming and very detail-oriented to make them perfect. So why not hire a professional?

Featured here is a recent client job that was a Christmas wedding, and she wanted to make the most out of the holiday. She purchased 3 different small stamps (two Christmas trees and a snowflake) to use for the place cards, and for the embossed Table Cards, I recommend she use a slightly larger snowflake stamp to both tie in to the other designs while distinguishing the table cards as separate.

I did a mix of the stamps, using red and green ink pads. I wanted to emboss all of the place cards and table cards first so I could write out the names in calligraphy after the place cards were done. That way, I wouldn't have to re-do names (which takes more time than embossing), and I wouldn't have to tediously place the stamp in the perfect place.

Calligraphy for Wedding Invitations

I had the fortunate pleasure of working with a delightful bride: one that really makes me love my job as a Boston wedding calligrapher. As a bride, she had a clear understanding of what she wanted, while being open to my ideas to help her - which always makes for a good bride-calligrapher relationship. She was also prompt, communicative, appreciative, and completely raved about my work when I completed her job.

"I thumbed through the envelopes -- I didn't feel as though I adequately expressed this when picking up the envelopes, but, truly, I am overjoyed at the results -- and I have high expectations! You have a beautiful talent, and I am just so glad that we met.  Thank you again -- it means so much to me to see the effort you are putting into this.  It could not have been a better fit." Melissa, Calligraphy Wedding Invitations Completed 2011

Melissa needed calligraphy for Inner and Outer Envelopes for her wedding invitations, priced at $2.50 per set. She also had an illustrated theme to her wedding, so she went with the more whimsical "dots" accents in between my signature spread out zip code.

If you are a bride looking for wedding calligraphy, look no further! I have worked with brides both in the city of Boston and as far away as New York City. Embossed Place Cards with Wedding Calligraphy

Embossing & Calligraphy for Table Cards, $2.50 each
A recent wedding calligraphy job I completed was for a holiday wedding that took place this month, after I had completed calligraphy for her wedding envelopes. Thanks to the bride, I have some great images to show you!

This bride wanted just a touch of holiday for her December wedding that took place this past weekend. She purchased three different small rubber stamps: a funky line Christmas tree, a more traditional Christmas tree, and a small snowflake. There was also a large snowflake, but I decided to use that one exclusively for the table cards, as it was bigger and would have overtaken the smaller place cards...not to mention be slightly out of place compared to the sizing of the other stamps.

Embossed Place Cards, $1.50 each

She needed her place cards embossed for the wedding reception, and handed over red and ink stamping pads, an embossing tool, stamp cleaner, and embossing powder. So, I got to work!

The embossing process is so much fun! I wanted to create an even amount of stamps and stamp colors, so I decided to emboss all the cards she gave me before writing out her guests' names in calligraphy. Using the three stamps, I decided to do an even amount of six different cards for guest names (each single stamp in red and green). Then to emboss, I stamped the lower right corner, sprinkled with embossing powder and used the heated embossing tool to melt the powder and create the raised, shiny look of an embossed design.

The results were gorgeous! The place card itself was a metallic silver color, so the red and green really popped against the shimmer. I wrote out each couple's name, and then wrote the table number in the left corner to balance the composition of the whole place card out.

There were also 17 tables at the wedding reception that needed calligraphy for table cards. I used the larger snowflake stamp to emboss even amounts of red and green table cards, then used the largest calligraphy nib I have (a C-1, for those keeping track at home!) and used a quill to write out each table number, 1-17. Each table card was placed on an adorable red and green tabletop "present" for each table. Lastly, I wrote out "Sweetheart Table" for the happy couple!

Thanks again to the bride for the images, so happy I was able to be a part of her special day :)

If you are contemplating embossed place cards and calligraphy for your wedding reception, or simply want a super reliable person to handle it for you (as you have enough to worry about!) please contact me for a consultation on what exactly your vision is: I'll be happy to work with you to help make your dream wedding come true!

Calligraphy for Wedding Invitations

Thanks to a recent client, I have another great image of my recent work! The wedding invitation calligraphy for these envelopes was written out for a December 2010 wedding, and the bride wanted the bigger, the better calligraphy!

The style, which was written out with a calligraphy pen and black ink cartridge, actually worked very well within the composition of the larger sized envelope. She also opted for the spread-out zip code on the last line, which is a calligraphy signature which has always been my personal favorite.

Calligraphy for Wedding Envelopes

Another recent calligraphy job for wedding invitation envelopes completed a few weeks back for a client that I actually met on Etsy, and did a Featured Etsy Shop Blog Post for! We connected when I interviewed her and featured her shop, ScrapHappyLyreBird, in a post over the summer. We re-connected when we found that we were local to each other, (Boston) and she happened to be getting married and needed a calligrapher to do her wedding invitations for her!

"Ashley did a fabulous job with our wedding invitations. We were so pleased with how they turned out. She was very easy to work with and we would highly recommend her to our friends and anyone looking for calligraphy services." - Tess, 2010 Wedding
I loved working with her envelopes: they were thick, and linked with a beautiful metallic gold scrolling detail on cream paper. I made the suggestion that she use the dots to embellish the spread out zip code (above) as it matched the theme of her invitations.

I've recently completed another outer envelope job and place cards over the past few weeks. Also in the works are commissioned professionally written invitations for a private party to be completed over the next few weeks on stationary. Stay tuned for updates and images!

Calligraphy for Quotes on Table Cards

After I finished her wedding invitations, this bride came to me with her place cards and table card calligraphy requests for her wedding. Her place cards were simple white cards on beautiful paper from the Paper Source - however, the paper used was really absorbent, so I had to use an acrylic ink with a dip quill pen so that the writing was crisp and wouldn't bleed into the card.

Then, the calligraphy for table cards were SO FUN to write out. She wanted romantic quotes from her favorite romantic movies underneath a prominent table number. THIS card took ink very well, so I was able to use my calligraphy pen with black ink cartridge for the fine font required for the quotes. I also used the acrylic again for the number, as I had to buy the biggest quill nib I could find to do the numbering, the "Thank you!" on the favor table, and "The Sweetheart Table". (The size was C-1, by the way. HUGE. I usually work with C-5's, C-4's max.

I was so pleased with how they came out - the black ink really popped on the pale pink of the cards, and it was beautiful. Enjoy!

Wedding Calligraphy for Place Cards

I just got this image from a client's wedding and I was totally stoked about her calligraphy project so I wanted to share it with you. She came to me a few months back with this idea to have wedding calligraphy done on artist palettes as her wedding place cards, as she was getting married in the Cape Cod Museum of Art. Her father-in-law cut the palettes out of little wooden hearts that she found at Michael's, and her mother-in-law then dotted the edges with paint.

I tested out the wood when she first suggested this idea, and I asked her to coat the wood with some sort of clear coat of paint: this was because when I used ink on the surface, the wood was so soft that it bled and absorbed the ink around it, so I couldn't make crisp lines.

Looks like they all worked out! It was kind of difficult determining how the names "lined up", as there's no bottom edge of the card to compare it to. But, all pinned up on the board like this, on a navy background with paint splatters all around it looks completely amazing. I'm waiting for more professional images, as this was a quick shot taken by a friend, so I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, enjoy my calligraphy awesomeness.

If you have a creative place card / table card wedding calligraphy idea, please email me. Seriously. This stuff makes me really happy :D

Affordable Wedding Calligraphy

I recently completed a custom calligraphy job for a woman named Nina, the owner of an gorgeous and adorable photography blog. Her envelopes called for a custom ink color, as her invitation font was a shade above a deep navy, but not quite royal blue. I mixed a color and used a medium quill pen to deliver these results.

She was also kind enough to take photographs of my work and sent them to me. I just love how she used all those multi-colored stamps on the envelopes - a great idea to make wedding invitations unique (and I must say, definitely "her"!) You can read the full blog post here and check out some more amazing images!

Now I am coming up on the next wedding season - that is, invitations going out for fall weddings. Although, I haven't really had a huge "break" in-between: there's always place cards to do!

To all my dear fellow freelance - ians: DO NOT DO THIS

Oh my dear, precious freelancers -

After a recent particularly awful calligraphy client experience, I wanted to just put this out there, so you never make the same mistake I did. There is just one rule when it comes to freelance: never negotiate your price. Why, do you ask? This merits a story.

I recently got an calligraphy inquiry (We'll call her Melissa) that was very interested in having me do a job for her. Then I did not hear from her for a while, and when I followed up with her, she said that due to budget restrictions, she could not do $1.00 per outer envelope, instead could only afford $0.75 per outer envelope. I did the math, and it was actually a decent amount of money, less the quarter. So I said yes.

Well, fast forward to the consultation, and surprise! Melissa thought that the outer envelope price also included writing the return address on the back of the envelope, which she neglected to mention in her email. In the past, all of the brides I have had always had their return address embossed when they have ordered the envelope, or not had it at all. Clearly, Melissa did not want to pay for that, either. So I explained to her that I would do the return address for an additional $0.50 per envelope, which was a mistake, but I was put on the spot.

That's not the end of the surprise! She also needed RSVP cards done. Now, come on - there's really no excuse for not mentioning that in the email, either. So since those were just the same address over and over again, I said I would do them for $0.50 each, also. So, we agreed that I would get $1.75 total per set.

I get the invitations, head over to Blick to get some pretty white ink for her navy envelopes, and a new quill and holder because I'd have to dip the pen every time I used it: white ink does not come in cartridge form or markers because of its opacity.

So I'm all excited to get started, and then I get a phone call. Melissa. She was on her way home, and was calculating the total, and decided it was too much money. If I was able to do the RSVP and the return address for $0.50, why couldn't I do the outer envelope for $0.50, too? So she wanted HALF my usual price. So on a job that I should have earned probably around $3 per set, I was now making $1.50. And she wanted them done in two weeks.

So, because of the sheer volume, I did make a good amount of money. However, my hand is still about to fall off and I'm now heading over to get the envelopes again (after dropping them off this morning) to fix 3 addresses that were wrong. What can we learn from this?

* Never negotiate your price, no matter how not-big-a-deal it may seem. This seemingly harmless adjustment will just lead to further complications later.

* You have experience doing what you do, and have determined a fair - if not underpriced - rate. They should respect that or take their business elsewhere.

* Above all else, don't second guess yourself. You are talented enough to have your own business and interested clients, there's no reason for you to want to get paid for it.

So get out there, kick ass and take names!!
